Cash on delivery (COD) on Vareons for online stores in Egypt

Cash on delivery (COD) on Vareons is a first-class payment method enabled from payment settings and shown at checkout, so the order is recorded for collection on delivery without a card gateway, with payment status kept separate from order status.

Cash on delivery fits the Egyptian market, where many customers prefer paying the courier. On Vareons, COD appears as a payment method at checkout when it is enabled in payment settings, and the order is recorded with payment status "unpaid" so the amount is collected on delivery. Payment status is separate from the operational order status, so an order can be Delivered while its payment is paid or partially paid depending on what was recorded.

After delivery, the merchant can record the payment on the order from the record payment action, which moves payment status to paid or partially paid and keeps the entry in the payment history. If the customer paid only part of the amount, the merchant tracks the remaining balance and records the rest later.

Because COD carries a non-delivery risk, Vareons provides two supporting tools: a server-calculated order risk score at order creation based on signals such as device, network, geo, order velocity, and multiple active reservations; and WhatsApp order confirmation when an account is connected and the setting is enabled. The customer's reply (confirm, cancel, or edit) is recorded against the order's WhatsApp confirmation status. Both tools help reduce non-serious orders, but neither blocks fake orders automatically.

COD can run alongside local payment gateways such as Paymob, Fawry, Kashier, InstaPay and Vodafone Cash, so the customer chooses the method that suits them while the store remains the single source of truth for the order and its price.

    Setup steps in Vareons

    1. Enable cash on delivery in payment settings

In the merchant dashboard open payment settings and enable the Cash on Delivery toggle. Checkout reads the value from the payment method settings, and when it is disabled the method does not appear to the customer.

    2. Confirm it appears at checkout

Open the public storefront and go through checkout to the payment methods section. Cash on Delivery should appear as an option. Payment methods render on the storefront, not inside the dashboard.

    3. Receive the order, then record the payment

After the order is delivered and the amount collected, open the order from the orders list and use the record payment action, so payment status becomes paid, or partially paid if only part was collected. The entry is kept in the payment history.

    4. Watch the risk score and confirm before shipping

Review the Risk column in the orders list and the order summary, and optionally enable the automatic WhatsApp order-confirmation setting when a WhatsApp Business account is connected. Remember that template delivery depends on Meta and requires a valid payment method on the account.

    Frequently asked questions

Does Vareons support cash on delivery?

Yes. Cash on delivery is a first-class payment method in payment settings and checkout, and orders are recorded for collection on delivery without a card gateway.

Can cash on delivery be disabled?

Yes. It can be enabled or disabled from payment settings per store policy, and when disabled it does not appear as an option at checkout.

    How do I record a cash-on-delivery collection?

Open the order after delivery and use the record payment action, so payment status becomes paid or partially paid and the entry is saved in the order payment history.

Can COD run alongside electronic payment gateways?

Yes. COD can run alongside local gateways such as Paymob, Fawry, Kashier, InstaPay and Vodafone Cash, so the customer chooses the method and order follow-up stays unified.

Does Vareons automatically block fake COD orders?

No. Vareons provides a risk score and WhatsApp order confirmation as supporting tools, but reducing fake orders also depends on merchant policy and confirming before shipping.

    Troubleshooting

    1) If COD does not appear at checkout, confirm it is enabled in payment settings. 2) Payment methods are not rendered inside the dashboard; check the public storefront. 3) If the WhatsApp confirmation message did not arrive, check the connected account and the WhatsApp Business payment method in Meta. 4) If the Risk column shows a dash, the result is unavailable, not low risk.

    Important limitations

    • The risk score is an evaluation signal, not an automatic order blocker. • Delivery of business-initiated WhatsApp templates depends on Meta and requires a valid payment method on the WhatsApp Business account. • Some merchants delay the Paid status in COD until the amount is actually collected; that is an operational choice, not a system limitation. • COD is collection on delivery and does not provide prepayment.
